Activity Description

Culturally responsive care for American Indian and Alaska Native populations requires recognition of the historical, social, and systemic factors that contribute to persistent health disparities and reduced access to preventive services. This course reviews epidemiologic trends affecting these communities, including elevated rates of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, substance use disorders, and certain cancers. Participants learn evidence-based preventive care strategies, metabolic and cancer screening recommendations, trauma-informed communication approaches, and methods for integrating respect for tribal sovereignty and traditional healing practices into clinical care. Instruction also examines federal trust responsibilities, referral considerations, and structural barriers within the health care system that influence care delivery and outcomes. Collaboration among primary care clinicians, nurses, behavioral health specialists, community health representatives, public health professionals, and tribal health partners strengthens coordinated care, promotes trust, improves preventive service utilization, and enhances culturally informed interventions that support equitable health outcomes for American Indian and Alaska Native patients and communities.
