Activity Description

Suicidal ideation refers to contemplation of self-harm or ending one’s life and is a critical mental health concern with potentially fatal consequences if not promptly recognized and managed. The condition may arise in individuals of any age or background and is commonly associated with psychiatric disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders. Contributing risk factors include prior suicide attempts, chronic illness, psychosocial stressors, trauma, and limited social support. The pathophysiology involves complex interactions among neurobiological, genetic, and environmental factors influencing mood regulation and impulse control. Clinical manifestations range from passive death wishes to detailed suicidal plans.

Diagnosis relies on comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and risk assessment, often incorporating validated screening tools. Management emphasizes ensuring safety, addressing underlying psychiatric or medical conditions, and initiating pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions. Complications include self-inflicted injury and completed suicide. Early identification and appropriate intervention significantly improve prognosis and reduce mortality associated with suicidal behavior.

This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to advance learners' competence in evaluating and managing suicidal ideation. Participants will deepen their understanding of the condition's etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Greater proficiency will equip clinicians to collaborate with interprofessional teams caring for affected individuals.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the presenting features of suicidal ideation, recognizing key patient risk factors.

  • Implement suitable screening strategies when evaluating patients with suicidal ideation.

  • Determine appropriate therapeutic approaches to manage suicidal ideation and prevent its sequelae.

  • Apply effective strategies among interprofessional team members to facilitate positive outcomes for individuals presenting with suicidal ideation.
