Activity Description

Cannabis contains multiple biologically active compounds, most notably delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol, with divergent psychoactive and therapeutic effects. Despite remaining a Schedule I substance at the federal level, cannabis use has expanded rapidly due to widespread state legalization, increasing product potency, and shifting public perceptions. These trends have contributed to rising rates of cannabis use disorder, which affects a substantial proportion of regular users and is associated with neuropsychiatric, cardiovascular, cognitive, and functional harms, particularly among adolescents and individuals with psychiatric comorbidity. This course reviews cannabis pharmacology, epidemiology, regulation, and clinical implications of cannabis use disorder in modern practice.

Additionally, this course outlines the neurobiological, genetic, and psychosocial factors underlying cannabis use disorder, high-risk populations, common clinical presentations of cannabis use disorder, and validated screening and diagnostic tools in diverse care settings. Participants will also gain an understanding of evidence-based management strategies, including first-line psychosocial treatments, harm reduction principles, and the distinction between medical cannabinoid use and disordered use, supporting safer, more informed, and patient-centered clinical decision-making. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying cannabis use disorder, performing the recommended evaluation and screening, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition to improve patient outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the neurobiological mechanisms contributing to cannabis use disorder.

  • Screen patients using validated tools to detect cannabis use disorder across clinical settings.

  • Apply evidence-based treatment modalities to promote recovery in patients with cannabis use disorder.

  • Coordinate interprofessional management strategies to improve care collaboration and outcomes in patients with cannabis use disorder.
