Activity Description

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune pigmentary disorder characterized by progressive destruction of melanocytes, resulting in well-demarcated depigmented macules and patches that can affect any body site. This course reviews vitiligo, which was once regarded primarily as a cosmetic condition but is now recognized as a systemic autoimmune disease associated with significant psychosocial burden and increased risk of comorbid autoimmune disorders, as well as its pathogenesis, particularly the role of interferon-gamma–driven immune responses, the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, and tissue-resident memory T cells, which have transformed therapeutic approaches and expanded treatment options. This activity explores the epidemiology, immunopathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, disease severity assessment, and management of vitiligo across diverse patient populations. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying vitiligo, performing the recommended diagnostic studies, such as Wood lamp examination and dermoscopy, evidence-based treatment strategies, including JAK inhibitors and phototherapy, the psychosocial and quality-of-life challenges, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

  • Assess the clinical features associated with each subtype of vitiligo.

  • Implement evidence-based management strategies tailored to the extent of vitiligo.

  • Coordinate interprofessional team care strategies to optimize management and improve outcomes in patients with vitiligo.
