Activity Description

Bacterial vaginosis is one of the most common vaginal infections affecting women worldwide, with significant implications for reproductive and overall health. The condition results from an imbalance in the vaginal microbiota, in which the typically dominant Lactobacillus species are overrun by organisms such as Gardnerella vaginalis. Bacterial vaginosis presents as increased vaginal discharge with a distinct odor and extends beyond discomfort, contributing to increased risks for sexually transmitted infections and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Despite its prevalence, misconceptions and inconsistent management persist, underscoring the need for improved clinician understanding and coordinated care.

This educational activity provides clinicians with a comprehensive review of the evolving understanding, diagnosis, and management of bacterial vaginosis. Once attributed solely to Gardnerella vaginalis, it is now recognized as a multifactorial condition involving various anaerobic bacteria. The activity highlights current evidence-based practices, including the 2025 American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommendation to consider partner treatment in recurrent or symptomatic cases and emerging therapies to reduce recurrence. Clinicians will review diagnostic approaches such as the Amsel and Nugent criteria, evaluate oral and topical treatment options, and explore the condition’s implications in pregnancy and its association with sexually transmitted infections. Through participation, clinicians will strengthen their ability to accurately diagnose, manage, and educate patients while integrating updated evidence into daily practice to improve outcomes. The activity concludes by emphasizing the importance of interprofessional collaboration in optimizing patient-centered care and reducing recurrence of bacterial vaginosis.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify high-risk populations, including pregnant individuals, those with multiple sexual partners, and patients with a history of sexually transmitted infections, to guide early screening and management.

  • Implement evidence-based preventive strategies, such as promoting condom use, limiting unnecessary antibiotic exposure, and considering adjunctive therapies like probiotics for microbiome restoration.

  • Apply current evidence-based treatment guidelines, including the 2025 American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommendation regarding partner management in recurrent or symptomatic cases.

  • Collaborate with an interprofessional team to educate, treat, and monitor patients with bacterial vaginosis to improve outcomes.

Could not find any reference to alcohol use and prescribing in this class. As a beginning prescriber that would be helpful.
