Activity Description

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection remains an uncommon but clinically significant cause of gastroenteritis, mesenteric lymphadenitis, and systemic inflammatory disease that may mimic appendicitis or progress to severe complications such as sepsis, intestinal obstruction, reactive arthritis, and Far East Scarlet-Like Fever. This course examines the transmission of this pathogen, which commonly occurs through contaminated food or water, with heightened risk among older adults, immunocompromised patients, and individuals with iron-overload states, as well as its diagnostic challenges, which arise from the organism’s poor growth on routine stool culture media and the need for specialized culture techniques, PCR testing, and targeted laboratory requests. This activity reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic evaluation, and management of Y pseudotuberculosis infection, including recognition of severe inflammatory presentations and extraintestinal complications. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, performing the recommended evaluation, differentiating self-limited disease from severe infection, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Differentiate the clinical manifestations of gastrointestinal Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection from those of Far East Scarlet-Like Fever.

  • Identify patients at risk of severe outcomes of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection.

  • Select appropriate individualized management approaches for patients with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis.

  • Implement strategies to improve interprofessional care coordination and communication in managing patients with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis.
