Activity Description

Acute promyelocytic leukemia is a distinct subtype of acute myeloid leukemia characterized by the PML::RARA fusion gene and a unique clinical course that includes a high risk of bleeding, coagulopathy, and rapid clinical deterioration if not recognized and treated promptly. Despite its historically poor prognosis, contemporary targeted therapies have resulted in high cure rates when appropriate treatment is initiated early. This course reviews the epidemiology, molecular pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, risk stratification, and management of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Participants learn to recognize characteristic clinical and laboratory findings, identify medical emergencies associated with coagulopathy, interpret cytogenetic and molecular diagnostic studies, and apply evidence-based treatment strategies. Emphasis is placed on prompt diagnosis and initiation of therapy to reduce morbidity and mortality. Collaboration among clinicians, hematologists, pathologists, pharmacists, nurses, transfusion medicine specialists, and other healthcare professionals enhances diagnostic accuracy, facilitates timely treatment, and improves patient outcomes through coordinated interprofessional care.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Assess clinical presentation, bleeding risk, coagulopathy, laboratory abnormalities, disease burden, and patient-specific factors in individuals with suspected or confirmed acute promyelocytic leukemia.

  • Determine the urgency of intervention, appropriate diagnostic testing, and optimal treatment strategy for patients presenting with suspected acute promyelocytic leukemia.

  • Evaluate treatment response, remission status, complications, molecular monitoring results, and long-term outcomes in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia.

  • Develop interprofessional communication and collaborative care strategies among clinicians, hematologists, pathologists, pharmacists, nurses, transfusion medicine specialists, laboratory professionals, and other healthcare professionals to enhance diagnostic accuracy, treatment coordination, and patient outcomes.
