Activity Description

Laryngitis is a clinical syndrome defined by inflammation of the laryngeal tissues, most commonly affecting the vocal fold mucosa, and presenting with dysphonia, hoarseness, or aphonia. Typical manifestations include abrupt voice changes, throat irritation, and cough, frequently following upper respiratory tract infections. Viral pathogens account for the majority of cases, whereas noninfectious causes include vocal overuse, inhalational irritants, and gastroesophageal reflux–related injury. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on focused history and head and neck examination, with laryngeal visualization reserved for persistent, recurrent, or concerning presentations. Supportive management—including hydration, humidification, voice rest, and avoidance of irritants—remains central, and antibiotics are rarely indicated. Red-flag features such as stridor, progressive dyspnea, systemic toxicity, or prolonged hoarseness necessitate evaluation for alternative etiologies, including structural lesions or malignancy, to prevent complications and ensure timely intervention.

This activity enhances clinicians' competence in the evaluation and management of acute laryngitis, with emphasis on distinguishing it from other laryngeal disorders. Participants review targeted history-taking, efficient symptom assessment, and appropriate indications for flexible laryngoscopy or referral to otolaryngology. The curriculum provides practical guidance on voice hygiene, reflux mitigation, and avoidance of environmental or behavioral triggers, while clarifying the pathways for escalation in cases of airway compromise or persistent dysphonia. Collaboration with an interprofessional team—including primary care clinicians, emergency clinicians, otolaryngologists, and speech-language pathologists—supports coordinated care, optimizes treatment selection, improves patient adherence, and reduces the risk of chronic voice impairment or complications, ultimately enhancing overall patient outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the signs and symptoms of acute laryngitis to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective management.

  • Differentiate between acute laryngitis and more serious laryngeal conditions, such as laryngeal cancer, vocal cord paralysis, or other inflammatory diseases.

  • Select the latest evidence-based treatment options for patients with acute laryngitis.

  • Implement interprofessional team strategies to enhance care coordination and communication, improving outcomes and treatment efficiency for patients with acute laryngitis.
