Activity Description

"Ionizing radiation" refers to high-energy electromagnetic waves or particles capable of removing electrons from atoms, resulting in molecular and cellular damage. Medical applications include diagnostic imaging modalities, such as x-ray imaging and computed tomography, as well as therapeutic interventions, including radiation treatment for malignancy. Diagnostic utility must be balanced against cumulative risks, as prolonged or repeated exposure increases malignancy risk through DNA damage and chromosomal abnormalities. Greater susceptibility to adverse effects has been observed in children and pregnant women. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to sharpen learners' skills in implementing medical procedures using ionizing radiation and evaluating potential candidates. Participants will strengthen their understanding of the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of ionizing radiation, as well as its benefits and risks. Enhanced competence will equip clinicians to collaborate effectively with interprofessional teams involved in the care of patients requiring these procedures.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Assess patients for indications and contraindications to ionizing radiation based on clinical features, risk factors, and diagnostic findings.

  • Develop evidence-based protocols guiding clinical decision-making, dose management, and risk reduction in patients undergoing ionizing radiation–based procedures.

  • Improve patient awareness regarding the relative risks and benefits of ionizing radiation–based procedures versus radiation-free alternatives.

  • Apply effective interprofessional team strategies to reduce the adverse effects of ionizing radiation on patients and radiation workers during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, promoting a culture of radiation safety and minimizing exposure-related risk.
