Activity Description

Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, characterized by infection of columnar epithelium at urogenital, rectal, pharyngeal, and conjunctival sites. This course reviews the clinical presentation of gonorrhea, which ranges from asymptomatic infection—particularly in individuals assigned female at birth—to symptomatic urethritis, cervicitis, or pelvic inflammatory disease, with potential progression to infertility, ectopic pregnancy, or disseminated disease. Participants will also gain an understanding of the pathophysiology, risk assessment using trauma-informed sexual history-taking, appropriate use of diagnostic modalities, and evolving treatment options for this condition, driven by increasing antimicrobial resistance, including newly approved oral agents. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners' competence in identifying varied presentations, implementing effective treatment and partner management strategies, applying updated screening recommendations, performing the recommended evaluation, and coordinating an appropriate interprofessional approach to managing this condition, thereby reducing complications, transmission, and public health burden.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify patients at risk for gonorrhea based on clinical factors.

  • Interpret diagnostic test results to distinguish between uncomplicated and disseminated gonococcal infections.

  • Apply current guidelines for gonococcal infections to select evidence-based antimicrobial therapy, including management of resistant strains.

  • Collaborate with interprofessional team members to coordinate management strategies, including partner management and counseling strategies, to improve outcomes in patients with gonococcal infections.
