Activity Description

Down syndrome, or trisomy 21, is the most common viable autosomal trisomy and the leading genetic cause of intellectual disability, resulting from an extra copy of chromosome 21. This condition is characterized by distinctive physical features and multisystem involvement, with increased risks of congenital heart defects, hematologic and autoimmune disorders, sleep-disordered breathing, sensory impairments, and early-onset Alzheimer disease. Contemporary management emphasizes prenatal and postnatal screening, complication management, prognosis, multidisciplinary care, and family-centered counseling.

This activity reviews contemporary care for individuals with Down syndrome, integrating current evidence on etiology, epidemiology, and pathophysiology while enhancing clinical recognition across organ systems. This activity provides healthcare providers with knowledge and skills to differentiate Down syndrome from phenotypic mimics, deliver clear, family-centered education, and coordinate multidisciplinary care and transitions to adulthood, enabling the implementation of practical care pathways that improve developmental and behavioral outcomes and support confident, evidence-based counseling. This activity also equips healthcare providers to coordinate lifelong surveillance and support using evidence-based frameworks that promote early detection of comorbidities, reduce preventable morbidity, and optimize long-term health, development, and quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome. In addition, this activity emphasizes interprofessional collaboration among healthcare professionals to interpret and communicate prenatal screening and diagnostic options, apply American Academy of Pediatrics–aligned surveillance, and recognize high-yield complications, including atrioventricular septal defect and other congenital heart defects, gastrointestinal anomalies, transient abnormal myelopoiesis, obstructive sleep apnea, celiac disease, and autoimmune thyroiditis.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify hallmark clinical features and high-yield complications associated with Down syndrome across the life span.

  • Screen newborns and children with Down syndrome for congenital heart defects, hearing and vision impairments, thyroid dysfunction, sleep-disordered breathing, and gastrointestinal anomalies.

  • Apply prenatal screening to identify trisomy 21 and assess developmental, behavioral, and psychosocial needs at each health supervision visit.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to optimize care and coordinate transitions from early intervention to school-based services and from pediatric to adult care.
