Activity Description

Breast abscesses represent localized collections of infected inflammatory exudate that may develop as complications of lactational mastitis or from nonlactational processes involving ductal abnormalities, smoking, diabetes, nipple piercing, or other predisposing factors. Although most cases occur in females aged 18 to 50 years, abscesses can also affect adolescents, neonates, and males, with nonlactational disease carrying a substantial risk of recurrence. This course reviews the accurate clinical evaluation of breast abscess, which requires recognition of characteristic findings, understanding of relevant microbiology, and appropriate use of ultrasound to distinguish drainable abscesses from mastitis or cellulitis, as well as management through source control, culture-directed antimicrobial therapy, and selection between needle aspiration and incision and drainage based on abscess characteristics and clinical response. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying breast abscesses, recognizing indications for drainage and additional diagnostic assessment, selecting appropriate antimicrobial strategies, addressing breastfeeding and pain management, identifying recurrent disease or persistent findings requiring evaluation for malignancy, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify clinical features that differentiate lactational from nonlactational breast abscesses to determine the need for further evaluation.

  • Assess a patient with a breast abscess to determine the likelihood of a drainable abscess.

  • Apply diagnostic testing results to select appropriate antimicrobial therapy for breast abscesses.

  • Collaborate with interprofessional teams to coordinate care and improve outcomes for patients with breast abscesses.
