Activity Description

As many as 90 species of bugs within the family Cimicidae have been identified, although few species feed on humans. The species most commonly associated with human bites include Cimex lectularius and Cimex hemipterus, with recent migration beyond traditional geographic ranges reported for both. Bed bug bites produce cutaneous reactions through salivary proteins that trigger inflammatory and hypersensitivity responses. Clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic lesions to pruritic papules, wheals, or bullae, often in clustered or linear distributions. Diagnosis is clinical and supported by evidence of infestation. Management emphasizes symptomatic treatment and elimination of bed bug infestation through environmental control measures. Prognosis is favorable, with lesions generally resolving without sequelae. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners' competence in evaluating and managing bed bug bites. Participants advance their understanding of the condition's etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, fostering interprofessional collaboration when caring for affected individuals.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the signs and symptoms indicative of bed bug bites.

  • Implement evidence-based, individualized strategies for managing bed bug bites and preventing their possible sequelae.

  • Improve patient awareness of bed bug bite features, environmental sources of infestation, and recommended measures to prevent reinfestation and recurrent exposure.

  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to educate, treat, and monitor patients with bed bug bites or increased risk of exposure to improve health outcomes.
