Activity Description

Atrial myxoma represents the most common primary cardiac tumor in adults and most frequently originates from the interatrial septum of the left atrium. Although histologically benign, atrial myxomas pose substantial clinical risk because of their propensity to cause intracardiac obstruction, systemic embolization, and inflammatory or constitutional symptoms. Clinical manifestations vary widely and may include exertional or positional dyspnea, syncope, stroke, peripheral emboli, fever, weight loss, or malaise related to cytokine release. Physical findings can fluctuate with body position and may include a diastolic murmur or “tumor plop.” Transthoracic echocardiography serves as the initial diagnostic modality, with transesophageal echocardiography providing superior anatomic definition, assessment of attachment site, and exclusion of additional masses. Prompt surgical excision remains the definitive treatment because of the ongoing risk of embolization, sudden hemodynamic compromise, and recurrence.

This educational activity addresses a recognized practice gap in the timely recognition and optimal management of atrial myxoma, as nonspecific presentations frequently delay diagnosis and referral. Participants enhance competence in identifying high-risk clinical features, selecting appropriate cardiac imaging, differentiating atrial myxoma from thrombus or other intracardiac tumors, and coordinating urgent surgical evaluation. The course emphasizes perioperative considerations, postoperative surveillance, and risk assessment for recurrence. Collaboration among cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, radiology, pathology, and nursing improves diagnostic accuracy, expedites intervention, reduces embolic complications, and supports longitudinal follow-up, ultimately improving patient safety and clinical outcomes through coordinated, evidence-based care.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify perioperative and postoperative complications associated with atrial myxoma resection.

  • Assess patient history, physical findings, and risk factors to raise clinical suspicion for atrial myxoma in appropriate presentations.

  • Interpret echocardiographic and adjunct imaging results within the clinical context to guide management decisions.

  • Strategize with an interprofessional team on ways to improve care coordination and communication to advance atrial myxoma and improve outcomes.
