Activity Description

Adenomyosis is a gynecologic condition characterized by ectopic endometrial tissue within the uterine myometrium and represents a common cause of dysmenorrhea and heavy menstrual bleeding with significant impact on quality of life. This course reviews the clinical presentation of adenomyosis, ranging from chronic pelvic pain and dyspareunia to asymptomatic disease identified incidentally, as well as recommended diagnostic studies, including transvaginal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, enabling noninvasive diagnosis and differentiation from leiomyomas and endometriosis. This activity also explores management strategies that are guided by symptom severity and fertility goals. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying adenomyosis, interpreting imaging findings, selecting individualized treatment, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the characteristic clinical features associated with adenomyosis.

  • Differentiate adenomyosis from other causes of abnormal uterine bleeding based on diagnostic findings.

  • Evaluate patient-specific reproductive goals to determine the most appropriate stepwise management approach for patients with adenomyosis.

  • Collaborate within the interprofessional team to improve care coordination and outcomes for patients with adenomyosis.
