Activity Description

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common lower respiratory tract infection associated with substantial morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality worldwide. CAP develops outside healthcare settings in individuals without significant healthcare exposure during the preceding 30 days. It remains a leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years globally and is a major cause of hospitalization among both children and adults in the United States. Typical bacterial pathogens, particularly Streptococcus pneumoniae, continue to play a significant role despite advances in vaccination and diagnostic testing. Accurate recognition of clinical features, risk factors, and likely pathogens is essential for timely diagnosis and appropriate antimicrobial therapy. This activity reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and evidence-based management of community-acquired pneumonia caused by typical bacteria. Participants will gain practical knowledge to improve diagnostic accuracy, guide treatment decisions, and optimize outcomes for patients with this common and potentially serious infection.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Differentiate the etiologies of typical bacterial community-acquired pneumonia.

  • Assess the clinical severity of patients with typical bacterial community-acquired pneumonia

  • Implement appropriate treatment options for typical bacterial community-acquired pneumonia depending on each patient's risk factors.

  • Collaborate with an interprofessional team, including pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and infectious disease specialists, to optimize patient outcomes.
