Activity Description

Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) is a gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium that colonizes the human stomach and is a major cause of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. While many infected individuals remain asymptomatic, persistent infection can lead to progressive gastric mucosal inflammation and symptoms such as epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, and dyspepsia, as well as an increased risk of complications including ulceration and malignancy. This continuing education activity reviews the current evidence-based approaches to the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of H pylori infection, with particular emphasis on appropriate test selection, confirmation of eradication, and the impact of antibiotic resistance on treatment decisions. The course also highlights the critical role of interprofessional collaboration in optimizing patient outcomes through coordinated care, patient education, and adherence to guideline-directed therapy.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Determine the mechanisms by which Helicobacter pylori colonizes the gastric mucosa, including urease production, motility, and epithelial adherence.

  • Select guideline-directed Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy based on regional resistance patterns and antimicrobial susceptibility findings.

  • Determine when post-treatment testing is needed to confirm eradication of Helicobacter pylori.

  • Collaborate with interprofessional healthcare team members to optimize the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with H pylori infection, improving patient outcomes and care coordination.

  • Outline the pharmacologic therapy as it applies to Helicobacter Pylori
