Activity Description

Erythrasma is a superficial bacterial skin infection caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum, predominantly affecting intertriginous areas such as the axillae, groin, inframammary folds, and interdigital spaces. Lesions present as well-demarcated, reddish-brown to hyperpigmented patches with fine scaling and minimal inflammation. Many patients exhibit subclinical disease or mild pruritus, which can delay recognition. Risk factors include obesity, diabetes mellitus, hyperhidrosis, inadequate hygiene, occlusive clothing, and residence in warm, humid climates. Diagnosis is primarily clinical and may be confirmed with Wood lamp examination, which reveals coral-red fluorescence due to porphyrin production. Potassium hydroxide microscopy excludes fungal infection, distinguishing erythrasma from dermatophytosis or candidiasis, while bacterial culture is rarely required in routine practice. Management emphasizes addressing underlying predisposing factors, maintaining skin hygiene, and applying topical antimicrobials such as fusidic acid, clindamycin, or erythromycin, with oral macrolides reserved for extensive or recurrent disease. The prognosis is favorable, although recurrence is common if risk factors remain unaddressed.

This educational activity enhances clinicians' competence in evaluating and managing erythrasma by deepening their understanding of the etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation. Participants gain proficiency in evidence-based diagnostic techniques, including Wood lamp examination, and in selecting appropriate topical or systemic antimicrobial therapy. Instruction emphasizes preventive strategies, patient education, and monitoring for recurrence. Collaboration with an interprofessional healthcare team, including nurses, pharmacists, and dermatology support staff, ensures coordinated care, reinforces adherence to hygiene and treatment protocols, and optimizes long-term outcomes for patients affected by erythrasma.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Create individualized management plans that integrate topical or systemic antimicrobial therapy, hygiene optimization, and preventive strategies tailored to patient-specific risk factors.

  • Differentiate erythrasma from fungal and inflammatory skin conditions using Wood lamp examination, clinical evaluation, and, when necessary, adjunctive testing.

  • Improve patient understanding of erythrasma risk factors, self-care strategies, and therapy adherence to promote favorable clinical outcomes and reduce relapse.

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with an interprofessional healthcare team, including dermatology nurses, pharmacists, and primary care clinicians, to ensure coordinated care, reinforce adherence, and optimize long-term patient outcomes.

  • Outline the pharmacologic therapy as it applies to Erythrasma
