Activity Description

Bladder stones are a distinct form of urolithiasis associated with urinary stasis, bladder outlet obstruction, neurogenic bladder dysfunction, chronic infection, foreign bodies, and metabolic abnormalities. Although relatively uncommon in industrialized nations, bladder stones remain clinically significant because they can lead to recurrent urinary tract infections, hematuria, urinary retention, chronic bladder inflammation, and impaired quality of life if left untreated. Clinical presentation is often nonspecific and may overlap with other lower urinary tract disorders, making accurate diagnosis and individualized management essential. This activity reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic evaluation, and contemporary management of bladder stones in adult and pediatric populations. Participants will strengthen their ability to recognize risk factors and clinical manifestations, select appropriate imaging and endoscopic diagnostic strategies, apply evidence-based medical and surgical therapies, prevent recurrence, and optimize patient-centered outcomes through coordinated interdisciplinary care.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify risk factors associated with bladder stone formation, including urinary stasis, bladder outlet obstruction, infection, and contributing metabolic or dietary factors.

  • Screen at-risk patients, including those with benign prostatic hyperplasia or neurogenic bladder, for bladder stones in the presence of suggestive symptoms or recurrent urinary complications.

  • Select the most appropriate management strategy for bladder stones, including medical therapy in select cases and endoscopic or open surgical intervention, based on stone size, composition, symptom burden, and patient-specific factors.

  • Implement interprofessional collaboration among clinicians, nurses, radiologists, and urologic specialists to coordinate evaluation, treatment, and follow-up care, thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing bladder stone recurrence.
