Activity Description

This activity aligns with the American Board of Obesity Medicine's content blueprint for the Obesity Medicine Board Examination. Specifically, this course covers the material in the "B" duties of a clinician (B: Treating Patients With Obesity) and the necessary task 6 in the outline (ie, B:6 in the examination blueprint): Bariatric devices and nonsurgical procedures.

Endoscopic bariatric and metabolic therapies (EBMTs) are minimally invasive, anatomy-preserving interventions that promote meaningful weight loss and improve obesity-related metabolic dysfunction. Options such as intragastric balloons and other device-based technologies address a treatment gap for patients with a body mass index of 30 to 40 kg/m² who have not achieved adequate results with lifestyle modification but may not qualify for or prefer bariatric surgery.EBMTs generally result in a 5% to 20% total body weight loss, offering reversibility, favorable safety profiles, and lower morbidity compared to surgery. Evidence demonstrates benefits in comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. Despite these advantages, practice gaps in patient selection, periprocedural care, and complication recognition contribute to preventable adverse events and reduced long-term durability.

This activity prepares clinicians to select appropriate candidates using validated criteria, implement standardized protocols, and effectively manage complications. Participants learn long-term follow-up strategies, including behavioral counseling, nutrition optimization, and metabolic monitoring, to support their ongoing health and well-being. Collaboration with interprofessional teams, comprising gastroenterologists, dietitians, and behavioral specialists, promotes coordinated care, enhances treatment safety, and sustains positive outcomes, ultimately improving patient-centered management of obesity.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Apply evidence-based patient selection criteria for use of bariatric devices, including body mass index stratification, contraindication screening, and multidisciplinary readiness assessment.

  • Implement comprehensive periprocedural care protocols, including preprocedural optimization, intraprocedural monitoring, and structured post-procedural management.

  • Select appropriate device-based therapy tailored to the patient's needs, anatomy, and comorbidity profile.

  • Facilitate effective interprofessional team coordination through standardized communication protocols and collaborative care pathways to enhance patient care.
