Activity Description

Inferior vena cava filters serve an important role in preventing pulmonary embolism in selected patients with venous thromboembolism who have absolute contraindications to anticoagulation, anticoagulation failure, anticoagulation-related complications, or progression of deep vein thrombosis despite appropriate therapy. Appropriate patient selection and management remain essential to optimize clinical outcomes and minimize device-related risks. This course reviews the indications, contraindications, mechanisms, complications, and clinical significance of inferior vena cava filters in the management of venous thromboembolic disease. Participants learn to evaluate candidacy for filter placement, recognize potential adverse events, and integrate evidence-based considerations into treatment planning and follow-up care. Emphasis is placed on balancing risks and benefits, monitoring for complications, and supporting informed clinical decision-making. Collaboration among clinicians, nurses, interventional specialists, radiologists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals strengthens care coordination, enhances procedural safety, and improves patient outcomes through comprehensive multidisciplinary management.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Compare the indications, contraindications, benefits, risks, and clinical outcomes associated with inferior vena cava filters and alternative venous thromboembolism management strategies.

  • Interpret clinical findings, imaging results, and therapeutic responses relevant to decision-making and follow-up care in patients receiving inferior vena cava filters

  • Develop interprofessional communication and collaborative management strategies among clinicians, nurses, radiologists, interventional specialists, pharmacists, and allied healthcare professionals to optimize patient safety and treatment outcomes.
