Activity Description

Thrombocytopenia is a hematologic condition defined by platelet counts below 150,000/µL. Platelets play a vital role in hemostasis and wound repair, and low levels can increase risks of bleeding and, paradoxically, thrombosis. This course reviews the clinical presentation of thrombocytopenia which varies with severity, from asymptomatic cases in mild disease to life-threatening hemorrhage in severe forms. Participants will also gain understanding of careful history-taking, physical examination, and laboratory evaluation crucial to uncover underlying etiologies of thrombocytopenia, eg, autoimmune disorders, infections, malignancies, or drug reactions and the need for prompt recognition of emergent conditions, including heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, hemolytic uremic syndrome, and pregnancy-associated complications, essential for reducing morbidity and mortality.

This course explores the pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of thrombocytopenia as well as distinguishing features between mild, moderate, and severe cases, red flag findings, and evidence-based treatment strategies tailored to etiology and risk level. Diagnostic tools and evolving therapies, including second-generation thrombopoietin receptor agonists are also reviewed. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in accurately identifying thrombocytopenia, performing the recommended evaluation, applying therapeutic decision-making, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition to enhance patient safety in both acute and chronic care settings and to optimize outcomes for patients across the spectrum of thrombocytopenia.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the clinical features associated with the various severities of thrombocytopenia.

  • Apply evidence-based diagnostic strategies, including history-taking, physical examination, and laboratory testing, to evaluate thrombocytopenia.

  • Select appropriate treatment approaches for a patient with thrombocytopenia.

  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to provide holistic care when treating patients with thrombocytopenia.
