Activity Description

This activity reviews radiofrequency ablation as a minimally invasive intervention for chronic facet-mediated axial spine pain and selected neuropathic and musculoskeletal pain syndromes. Chronic pain and low back pain contribute substantially to disability, healthcare utilization, opioid exposure, and reduced function. Despite evidence supporting radiofrequency ablation after appropriate diagnostic nerve blocks, clinicians may inconsistently select patients, interpret block responses, apply procedural safety standards, and coordinate postprocedure monitoring and rehabilitation. This activity addresses that gap by reviewing relevant anatomy, indications, contraindications, patient preparation, procedural steps, adverse events, and interprofessional care responsibilities. Participants will gain actionable strategies for improving patient selection, applying evidence-based procedural guidance, reducing complications, recognizing postprocedure neurologic or thermal injury concerns, and coordinating nursing, rehabilitation, and follow-up care to support patient-centered outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify evidence-based indications for radiofrequency ablation in patients with facet-mediated axial spine pain and selected chronic pain syndromes.

  • Assess contraindications, anticoagulation considerations, implanted device precautions, and anatomic factors that may increase procedural risk.

  • Determine appropriate intraoperative and postprocedure monitoring strategies to detect neurologic, hemodynamic, allergic, infectious, or thermal complications.

  • Coordinate interprofessional care among clinicians, nurses, rehabilitation professionals, and behavioral health specialists to support safe recovery and functional improvement.
