Activity Description

Dumping syndrome is a postprandial disorder caused by rapid gastric emptying, most commonly following bariatric or oncologic surgery involving the stomach or esophagus. This course discusses the pathophysiology of dumping syndrome, which results from the disruption of normal gastric and duodenal regulatory mechanisms, including pyloric control, neural signaling, and gastrointestinal hormone release as well as its presentations, which are classified as either early dumping, occurring within 1 hour of meals and characterized by gastrointestinal distress and vasomotor instability, or late dumping, occurring 1 to 3 hours after meals and marked by hypoglycemia due to exaggerated insulin responses. Recognition relies on characteristic meal-related symptoms, validated symptom questionnaires, and selective use of provocative testing.

This activity reviews the diagnostic evaluation and evidence-based management of dumping syndrome. Participants can expect to gain an understanding of the distinguishing features of early and late dumping, consensus diagnostic criteria, and a stepwise treatment approach emphasizing dietary modification and appropriate pharmacologic therapy. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying dumping syndrome, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach to manage this condition, thereby improving symptom control and reducing complications and impaired quality of life in postoperative patients.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.
