Activity Description

Cervical spondylosis, the most prevalent degenerative condition of the cervical spine, predominantly affects individuals aged 60 and older. Progressive degenerative changes, including intervertebral disc desiccation, reduced disc height, spinal alignment alterations, and degeneration of uncovertebral and facet joints, characterize this condition. Osteophyte formation frequently accompanies these changes, potentially causing axial neck pain, cervical radiculopathy, or cervical myelopathy, significantly impairing daily function and quality of life. As a natural aging process, spondylosis affects most individuals after the fifth decade, with the cervical spine’s unique role in supporting extensive motion and protecting neural and vascular structures increasing its susceptibility to degeneration. Symptoms manifest as neck pain and stiffness, often with radicular symptoms when neural structures are compressed. Given its prevalence and associated disability, cervical spondylosis imposes a substantial economic burden, necessitating timely recognition and evidence-based management to mitigate this condition's impact on patients’ lives.

This educational course provides clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of cervical spondylosis, focusing on epidemiology, pathobiology, and modifiable risk factors. Through evidence-based clinical strategies, participants learn to differentiate uncomplicated neck pain from complex presentations requiring urgent intervention, such as myelopathy or radiculopathy. The course explores treatment options, including conservative management, image-guided interventions, and surgical approaches like arthroplasty and laminoplasty, emphasizing their indications, outcomes, and cost-effectiveness. Clinicians gain skills to align therapeutic decisions with individual patient needs, enhancing functional recovery. Interprofessional collaboration, involving neurosurgery, physical medicine, physical therapy, pain management, and primary care, enhances patient outcomes by improving diagnostic accuracy, streamlining care transitions, and supporting value-based care principles.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the biomechanical, genetic, and lifestyle factors that precipitate and accelerate cervical spondylosis across the adult lifespan.

  • Assess patients with suspected cervical spondylosis using focused history, neurological examination, and appropriate imaging to stratify disease severity and urgency of intervention.

  • Implement individualized, guideline concordant management plans, including education, pharmacologic therapy, targeted rehabilitation, and surgical intervention, tailored to disease phenotype and patient goals.

  • Collaborate with an interprofessional team to coordinate imaging review, nonoperative care escalation, and postprocedural follow-up, improving functional outcomes and patient satisfaction.
