Activity Description

Ampicillin is a widely used aminopenicillin antibiotic with activity against susceptible gram-positive organisms, including Enterococcus species and Listeria monocytogenes, as well as selected gram-negative pathogens. Despite its longstanding role in clinical practice, appropriate use of ampicillin requires an understanding of its antimicrobial spectrum, mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetic properties, dosing considerations, adverse effects, and resistance patterns. Ampicillin remains an important therapeutic option for serious infections such as endocarditis, meningitis, bloodstream infections, and selected intra-abdominal and urinary tract infections. This activity reviews the indications, off-label uses, administration, monitoring, toxicity, contraindications, and interprofessional management considerations associated with ampicillin therapy. Participants will gain knowledge and practical strategies to optimize antimicrobial selection, individualize dosing in special populations, recognize and manage adverse reactions, apply antimicrobial stewardship principles, and collaborate effectively with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to improve patient outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify clinical indications and pathogen susceptibility patterns that support appropriate use of ampicillin for the treatment of serious bacterial infections.

  • Evaluate patients receiving ampicillin for adverse drug reactions, toxicity, and treatment response to facilitate timely intervention and complication prevention.

  • Develop monitoring plans that incorporate assessments of renal and hepatic function during prolonged ampicillin therapy.

  • Strategize antimicrobial stewardship interventions with the healthcare team to optimize ampicillin use, reduce unnecessary antibiotic exposure, and minimize antimicrobial resistance.
