Activity Description

Blunt abdominal trauma is a common emergency presentation in both adults and children, most frequently resulting from motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults, and sports-related injuries. This course reviews the epidemiology, mechanisms of injury, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and evidence-based management strategies essential for timely recognition and intervention. Participants learn to identify signs of intra-abdominal injury, interpret appropriate imaging and laboratory findings, and apply current management principles for both operative and nonoperative care. Emphasis is placed on rapid assessment, hemodynamic stabilization, and early detection of life-threatening complications to reduce morbidity and mortality. The course also highlights prevention strategies and patient education to reduce the incidence of abdominal injuries. Collaboration among emergency medicine clinicians, trauma surgeons, radiology professionals, nursing staff, and other interprofessional healthcare team members enhances diagnostic accuracy, streamlines decision-making, and promotes coordinated care, ultimately improving patient outcomes through timely intervention and comprehensive management.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Assess hemodynamic status, injury severity, and risk factors in patients presenting with suspected blunt abdominal trauma.

  • Identify early clinical signs of intra-abdominal bleeding, organ injury, and complications associated with blunt abdominal trauma.

  • Improve clinicians' competence in patient and public education on seatbelt use and injury-prevention strategies.

  • Describe how an interprofessional team can collaborate to improve the rapid diagnosis, resuscitation, evaluation, and management of this condition and education of patients about safe driving to prevent blunt abdominal trauma.
