Activity Description

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus transmitted through exposure to infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk, targeting CD4+ T cells and progressively impairing cell-mediated immunity. This course reviews the early clinical course of this infection, which may present with nonspecific symptoms such as fever, lymphadenopathy, and myalgia, followed by an asymptomatic phase marked by ongoing viral replication and declining CD4+ counts, ultimately increasing the risk of opportunistic infections and defining progression to AIDS. Participants will gain an understanding of how advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART) have transformed HIV into a manageable chronic condition when initiated early, as well as HIV virology, transmission, prevention strategies, occupational exposure management, and current treatment approaches.  This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying early manifestations, applying evidence-based prevention and postexposure protocols, implementing risk-reduction and ART protocols, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when coordinating safety protocols, thereby effectively reducing the risk of accidental needle-sticks and occupational exposure and optimizing patient outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and dentists.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify common HIV transmission occupational risk factors to guide appropriate prevention strategies in hospital settings.

  • Apply evidence-based HIV testing algorithms to ensure timely diagnosis.

  • Select appropriate antiretroviral therapy regimens in accordance with current guidelines to optimize treatment outcomes.

  • Apply effective interprofessional team strategies in the hospital environment to promote a culture of safety and reduce the risk of HIV transmission.
