Activity Description

Lidocaine is a widely used local anesthetic and class Ib antiarrhythmic agent with important applications in regional anesthesia, pain management, airway procedures, and the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias. Its diverse formulations, rapid onset of action, and expanding role in perioperative and multimodal analgesia make a thorough understanding of its pharmacology and safe administration essential for clinicians across multiple specialties. This activity reviews lidocaine’s mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, approved and off-label uses, dosing strategies, and formulation-specific considerations. Participants will enhance their ability to recognize contraindications, adverse effects, drug-drug interactions, and signs of local anesthetic systemic toxicity while applying evidence-based monitoring and overdose management strategies. Emphasis is also placed on dose adjustment in special populations, guideline-directed use, and interprofessional collaboration to improve patient safety and optimize clinical outcomes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and dentists.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the pharmacologic properties, dosage forms, and routes of administration of lidocaine.

  • Differentiate among local anesthetic, antiarrhythmic, and topical analgesic applications of lidocaine based on their mechanisms of action and therapeutic goals.

  • Determine maximum safe lidocaine doses based on patient weight, formulation, epinephrine use, and comorbid conditions.

  • Collaborate with interprofessional healthcare team members to optimize patient safety, minimize complications, and improve outcomes associated with lidocaine therapy.
